Susan Warner was born around 1835 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, daughter of a plaiter called Mary Warner, formerly Swallow, and her husband Francis Warner, an agricultural labourer. Both her parents had been married before and she had a number of older half-siblings. Susan appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at Cold Harbour in Harpenden. Despite only being five years old at the time, she was already working as a plaiter.
In 1844, Susan's father died. The 1851 census finds Susan living with her mother and two half-siblings at Top Street in Hertfordshire. Later that year her mother married again to an agricultural labourer called William Myers, who thus became Susan's stepfather.
In 1857, Susan had a son, William Abraham Nicholls. His father was Daniel William Nicholls, who Susan must have known since childhood, as he had been a near neighbour to her in the 1841 census at Cold Harbour. For reasons that are unclear, Susan and Daniel never married, yet they lived together, had seven children together, and described themselves as married in the censuses. Also in 1857, about the same time that Susan's first child was born, her mother died.
Susan and Daniel appear in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living at Nomansland in the parish of Wheathampstead, which is a rural hamlet to the south of the main village.
Susan died on 17th June 1871 at Nomansland, aged 36. Her seven children ranged in age from fourteen down to about three months when she died. Daniel survived her by nearly thirty years, and would go on to marry Susan's half sister Maria Hornet a few months after Susan's death.
