Sarah Warner was born on 17th June 1838 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Warner, formerly Swallow, and her husband Francis Warner, an agricultural labourer. Sarah appears in the 1841 census living at Cold Harbour in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden with her parents and siblings, including half siblings from both her parents' previous marriages.

In 1844, when Sarah was five years old, her father Francis died. After his death, Sarah went to live with her half-sister Mary Ann Wheeler, formerly Hornet, who was one of her mother's children by her first marriage. In 1857, when Sarah was eighteen years old, her mother Mary died. The 1861 census finds Sarah lodging at a house in Wheathampstead and working as a plaiter.

On 22nd October 1864, aged 26, Sarah married an Alfred Freeman, who was also 26 and from Wheathampstead. Sadly, Sarah died less than two years after their marriage, aged just 28. She was buried at Wheathampstead on 29th July 1866.
