    13. SIMON7 DEHART, JR. (SIMON6, ELIAS SIMON5, SIMON AERTSZEN4, AERT SYMOSZ3, SYMON JACOBUS2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1728 in SC? or VA?, and died Aft. 1788 in prob. Botetourt Co, VA. He married (1) RACHEL. She was born Abt. 1730, and died Aft. 1770. He married (2) HANNAH Abt. 1749. She was born Abt. 1730 in VA?, and died Aft. 1813 in Hardin Co, KY.
Notes for SIMON DEHART, JR: Simon's birthplace is uncertain, but he may have lived in Madison District, Amherst Co, VA from about 1760 - 1788. The earliest record is from 1762, when Simon Jr. bought land from his brother Elias in Amherst Co, VA (Book A, p. 68 of the Amherst Co. Deed Records), which was created in 1761 from Albermarle County. In August 1767, Simon was living on Craig's Creek but it appears that he did not own the land. His residence was cited in a listing of various tracts of land, but he is not identified as the owner.

Craig's Creek is a branch of the James River near Roaring Run, VA. The Librarian at the Regional Library in Lexington, VA was quite familiar with Craig's Creek and said it was very large (personal interview by ML Cook, 29 Nov, 2003). The next mention of Simon was on 2 June 1770 when he sold 108 acres of land in Amherst Co. to his brother Aaron for 5 shillings. It was this deed that mentioned Simon's wife, Rachel, according to Torres (2002). This was probably the Simon who received a land patent on 1 Aug 1772 on Craig's Creek in Augusta Co.

Amherst Co.,VA Land and Deed Abstracts:
2 June 1787 RALPH LEMASTER & wife Lucy, AC, to Sackville King, Campbell Co., for L54-5-6, 239 acres both sides Porrage; part of 244 acres pat. to JNO LEMASTER, 10 Sept 1787(sic) and part of pat. to Simon Dehart & remainder now belongs to ABRAHAM LEMASTER & Aaron Dehart. Lines: S side Porrage, Henry Turner, Wm. Turner, Jno Turner, JNO LEMASTER(part of grant to JNO LEMASTER SR), Jno Woods, ABRAHAM LEMASTER,
Jno Christain. 239 acres contains 189 acres of JNO LEMASTER's grant and 50 acres of Simon Dehart's grant.
The final mention of Simon, Jr. was on 9 July 1788 in Botetourt Co. when he received a land grant of 200 acres. The county seat at that time was Fincastle. Walter Berg has his date of death as 20 Aug 1772 in Botetourt Co, VA.
Botetourt Co. was established in 1772, but I have not been able to verify this date.
Note: There is no DeHart on the 1794 tax list for Botetourt County - probably because they all went to KY.
Notes for HANNAH: Linda Spencer states that Hannah married William Wooley, and that they moved to Hardin Co, KY along with some of Hannah's children (GenForum, 1 March 2003). William Wooley provided the bond for Kesiah DeHart's marriage to David Waddle.
I believe Hannah's 2nd husband is William Owley, who signed the marriage bond for Aisle Dehart, when she married Downey Reed. William Owley is on a list of 1792 taxpayers in Madison Co, Kentucky (formed 1785 but still part of VA). Several of Hannah's children stayed in Kentucky as adults.
Interesting note: Madison County, KY was the site of Daniel Boone's outpost, Fort Boonesborough. Before 1777, Kentucky was part of Botetourt Co, VA. Kentucky Co. was established in 1777, and it was ceded to the Federal Government by Virginia in 1789. Edwin Howe DeHart's letter of 15 Aug 1934 states that his grandmother moved to
Switzerland Co, IN with her three sons and one daughter.
1810 census, Elizabethtown, Hardin, Kentucky: Wm Owley (age 45+) with 1 male (under 10), 1 woman (20-44) and 1 woman (45+).
1820 census, Campbellsville, Green, Kentucky: William Owley
