Sarah Parsons was baptised on 12th May 1816 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of William and Elizabeth Parsons.

Sarah's mother died in March 1837. Later that year, on 2nd December, Sarah married her cousin Thomas Cain; their mothers were sisters. Thomas was from the neighbouring parish of St Paul's Walden, although they married at nearby Knebworth. Sarah's father can be found in the 1841 and 1851 censuses living in the hamlet of Rye End which is in Knebworth parish but right on the border with both Kimpton and St Paul's Walden parishes, so presumably that is where Sarah grew up.

Sarah and Thomas settled in St Paul's Walden after their marriage, living in the parish's main village of Whitwell. Thomas worked as a tanner, whilst Sarah was a plaiter. Thomas and Sarah had five children together between 1839 and 1854.

Sarah died at Whitwell on 23rd January 1880, aged 63. Thomas outlived her by eleven years.
