Sarah Hammond was baptised on 26th February 1790 at South Bersted in Sussex, daughter of Sarah Hammond, formerly Stocker, and her husband George Hammond, a blacksmith.

On 26th December 1808, aged eighteen, Sarah married Thomas Martin at South Bersted. He was originally from South Bersted too, but had moved to the neighbouring parish of Felpham some time before their marriage.

Sarah and Thomas settled in Felpham after their marriage, having ten children baptised there between 1809 and 1832. Thomas worked as a fisherman.

Back in South Bersted, Sarah’s mother died in 1827.

In the summer of 1835, one of Sarah’s sons, Thomas, died at the age of seventeen, being buried at Felpham on 12th July 1835. Sarah died just a few weeks later, being buried at Felpham on 2nd August 1835, aged 45.

Sarah’s husband Thomas survived her by over 42 years. Her father also outlived her.
