Henry Hammond was baptised on 22nd October 1778 at South Bersted in Sussex. He was the son of Sarah Hammond, formerly Stocker, and her husband George Hammond, a blacksmith.

On 26th May 1803, aged 24, Henry married Charlotte Creese at South Bersted. They went on to have two sons baptised at South Bersted: Henry in 1804 and Charles in 1807. Charlotte has yet to be traced after Charles’s baptism.

The 1841 census finds Henry living at the Barley Mow public house in South Bersted, working as a journeyman blacksmith.

Henry died at the aged of 68. He was buried at South Bersted on 18th April 1847.
