Jane or Jenny Hammond was baptised on 15th June 1792 at South Bersted in Sussex, daughter of Sarah Hammond, formerly Stocker, and her husband George Hammond, a blacksmith.

On 5th April 1814, aged 21, Jane married William Warren, a baker. They married in the city of Chichester, a few miles north of South Bersted. They married at the church of St Pancras on the eastern side of the city.

Jane and William settled in Chichester after their marriage. They went on to have three daughters and a son baptised at St Pancras in Chichester between 1815 and 1830.

Back in South Bersted, Jane’s mother died in 1827. Her father then came to live in St Pancras parish in Chichester, quite likely with Jane and her family. Jane’s father died in 1836.

The 1841 census finds Jane, William, three of their children and a grandson living on the street called St Pancras in Chichester. Jane, William and their youngest daughter were still there in 1851, when William was described as a master baker employing three men. By 1861 the number of men he employed had fallen to one.

Jane died in 1866, aged 74. William survived her by about eleven years.

    1792 / June 15th / Jenny; Daught[e]r of George & Sarah Hammond

This baptism has been linked to the Jane Hammond who married William Warren in 1814 at St Pancras church in Chichester on the basis that it is in the parish she gave as her birthplace in the 1851 census and at the time implied by the ages quoted for her. There do not appear to have been any “Jane Hammond” baptisms at South Bersted around that time, nor any marriage or burial record for a “Jenny Hammond” in the area afterwards. Moreover, the adult Jane gave one of her daughters the distinctive middle name of Stocker, which was the maiden name of this Jenny’s mother. Jenny’s older brother George had also moved from South Bersted to the parish of St Pancras in Chichester and worked as a baker, which was the same occupation as William Warren.
