Grace Hammond was baptised on 13th July 1795 at South Bersted in Sussex, daughter of Sarah Hammond, formerly Stocker, and her husband George Hammond, a blacksmith. Grace was the youngest of their eight children.
Grace’s mother died in 1827 and her father died in 1836.
By 1841 Grace was living with her sister Elizabeth and her husband in the town of Littlehampton, about seven miles along the coast from South Bersted.
On 9th August 1846, aged 51, Grace married a tailor called John Wright at Littlehampton. He was a widower, with one adult son from his first marriage.
The 1851 census finds Grace and John living in the parish of Lyminster (often spelled Leominster at the time) just north of Littlehampton, with John described as a licensed victualler. They were listed in the census immediately before the household of a station clerk, and later records describe John as being the publican of the Locomotive Inn, which had been built next to the Arundel and Littlehampton railway station which had opened in 1846 on the line from Brighton to Chichester.
Grace died in 1857, aged about 62. She was buried at Lyminster on 2nd July 1857. John survived her by nearly nine years.
