  4.   An early example of "Internet genealogy" over 100 years before the Internet! The following author apparently relied on the research of others without checking if it was even reasonable.

Source:Wheeler, Albert Gallatin. Genealogical and Encyclopedic History of the Wheeler Family in America, p. 27: Children of Hezekiah Wheeler and Sarah Buss: [#190] "Samuel Wheeler born 1744. Whose descendants claim he was the son of the above parents." If the author had done any checking of the "descendants claim", he would have found no Samuel born in Acton in 1744, and that on 31 Mar 1744, Hezekiah and Sarah had a daughter named Abigail. No birth of a Samuel is recorded in the family of Hezekiah and Sarah at all, in fact, though 11 other children managed to get recorded in this family.

Ibid, p. 32-3: [#190] Samuel Wheeler, b. 1744, d. Acton 13 Jan 1832, m. Ruth ---, who was born in Acton 13 Oct 1740. Children: John, Samuel, Joseph, Jonas, Patty, Nathan b. 12 Nov 1771, Ruth. If the author had checked this information, he would have found that there are no children (at all!) recorded to a Samuel and Ruth Wheeler in Acton, that Nathan's birth on this exact date is recorded to parents Samuel and Martha Wheeler, that there is no record of the death of a Samuel Wheeler in 1832. (Samuel and Martha also had children John, Jonas, and Joseph mentioned here, plus Martha not mentioned here, but no Samuel, Patty or Ruth according to Acton VRs). The author might have wondered how we know the wife's birth date, but not her maiden name. Perhaps he would have been struck by the oddity that the only birth in Acton on this date is "Wheeler, John, s. Joseph and Ruth, Oct. 13, 1740" (Samuel's younger brother), suggesting sloppy bookkeeping.
