McKemy, Samuel - entered service 1780 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, where born in 1759 [area was then Augusta County until Rockbridge County was formed in 1778]; granted Pension 1833 in Green County, Tennessee, where he died 8/23/1834; married 9/12/1783 to Sarah Dixon who died 12/9/1841; children's births: Rebecka 12/19/1783, Robert 1/4/1787, Anna 3/9/1789, Elender 3/22/1791, Alexander 7/3/1793, Jinny 4/22/1796, Samuel 10/9/1799, Jane* 7/5/1806, John* 7/4/1809, Rebeckah 7/19/1811*, Samuel 3/24/1814*, Poley 12/17/1819*, & Hugh 2/29/1824*; son Robert married 10/1/1805 to Elizabeth Porter; son Alexander married 3/26/1818 to Malinda Borden; son Samuel married 12/5/1825 to Polly Gabell; son Robert McKemy md (2) 3/21/1839 to Nancy Gragg; son Robert applied for Bounty Land Warrant 1844 in Green County, Tennessee for self & surviving siblings: Alexander, Rebecca Cook, Elender Ottinger, & Jane Borden, & they were granted Pension due mother.   • Note: the children with asterisks (*), born between 1806-1824 are children of Samuel McKemy's eldest son Robert who married Elizabeth Porter in 1805. These children and their birthdates were written in a different column in a different handwriting than the children listed of Samuel McKemy and his wife Sarah Dixon, on the original Revolutionary Revolutionary War Pension Statement.

Will Transcript

Will of Samuel McKemy dec'd, Tuesday 27th Jany. 1835, (18, p. 17) [note: many mis-spelled words]
The execution of the Last Will and Testament of Samuel McKemy dec'd was duly proven by the oath of Elijah Borden and George Masoner Subscribing Witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded, and is as follows:
In the name of God Amen, I Samuel McKemy of the County of Greene and State of Tennessee being in a low state of health but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God calling into mind the Mortality of my body and knowing that it is unto all men once to die do make, ordain and declare this instrument to be my last Will and Testament revoking all others.
First and principaly I recommend my Soul to God who gave it, and my body I recommend to be buried in a deacent Christian like maner. And as touching such Worldly estate as God has blessed me with in this life, I do dispose of in the following manner.
Item 1st I give and bequeath to my beloved Wife Sarah McKemy during her natural life or widowhood, the use, benefit and profit of the (p. 128) farm where I now live togather with all my household and kitchen furniture and live stock of every description, except one bay hors[e] called Tom, and one Cow which I give and bequeath to my Son Samuel McKemy and his heirs forever And if she should mary [marry] it is my will that she have one third part of all my household and kitchen furniture and live stock of every kind and that to her own proper use forever and the remainder to be eaquealy [equally] divided between my Son and daughter Samuel and Rebaca McKemy; And if she does not mary [marry] the whole to be devided eaquely [equilly] between the sd. Samuel and Rebeca at her death.
Item 2nd I give and bequeath to my son Robert McKemy all that part of my land included withing the following described line begining on the North side of my old survey near the branch above Frethias Walls' mill and runing a straight line with the sd. Roberts fence so as to include the fence ten poles to the South side of my old survey and with the line of said tract to the black oaks corner near McMurtry's branch, All on the side of said line to him and his heirs forever.
Item 3rd I give and bequeath to my son Alexander McKemy that part of my land included within the following line begining on the West line of my old tract twelve poles on the North side of the rocky hollow then a straight line to a large poppelar on the branch near a stoly nole the a straight line to strike the line of that part bequeathed to Robert McKemy at the midle [middle] of the said Robert's field All on the north side of said line to him and his heirs forever.
Item 4th I give and bequeath to my Son Samuel McKemy all the remainder of my land including the improvement whare [where] I now live to him and his heirs forever.
Item 5th In consideration of the above bequeast it is my Will that Robert McKemy pay to my daughter Jiny Bordon one hundred Dolers [Dollars] in tread in four years after my deceas which I give to her and her heirs forever. And that Alexander McKemy pay to my daughter Ellennor Ottinger One hund[r]ed dollers in tread in five years after my deceas Which I give and bequeath to her and her heirs forever. And that my son Samuel McKemy pay to my daughter Ann Ottinger One hundred dollers in tread in five years after the deceas of my beloved Wife Sarah McKemy which I give to her and heirs forever. Also it is my Will that my son Samuel McKemy pay One hundred dollers in tread to my daughter Rebeca McKemy in five years after the deceas of my beloved Wife Sarah McKemy, which I give and bequeath to her and her heirs forever.
Item 6th It is my Will that all my just debts be paid out of my Estate and my executors hereinafter named is hereby directed to make sale of my Black-Smith tools and to collect all my outstanding debts and devied [devide] the money into nine eaqual shears [shares] giving three of said shears [shares] to my son Samuel McKemy and one shear [share] to each of my other children to wit: Robert McKemy, Alexander McKemy, Anne Ottinger, Elenor Ottinger, Jiny Bordon and Rebeca McKemy which I give to them and their heirs forever.
Item 7th I give and bequeath to my son Samuel McKemy my oragon [organ], rifle gun and farming tools and that to him and his heirs forever.
And I do hereby constitute and appoint George Cook and John Gragg my Executors to execute this my last Will and Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and seal this this sixth day of February 1820.

    State of Tennessee Green County: On this 26th day of September 1833 personally appeared before me William M Crawford one of the acting Justices of the peace in and for said County Samuel McCamy [sic] a resident citizen of said County & State aged seventy-four years who being by me first duly sworn made & subscribed the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the act of Congress passed the 7th day of June 1832. He the said Samuel McCamish [sic] being unable to attend the Court and there make out his said claim Virginia he continued there until the Revolutionary war and in the year 1780 commenced his service as a militia man for the defense of the Country and served under the following named officers as herein after stated, to wit, that in the month of April 1780 he enrolled himself as a volunteer under Captain Tilford [probably Alexander Tedford] of the Virginia militia for to go against the Indians and was marched to Donnelly's Fort & there kept for one month & discharged by his Captain & returned home said discharge was verbal.
    Again on his return home he volunteered under Captain McCoynel for a three months tour of duty and enrolled himself and said officer, on the first of June 1780, was marched under the command of General Muhlenberg [Peter Muhlenberg], to defend the Country when the British fleet was in the Bay & rivers was taken to Williamsburg and there kept with the expectation of the British landing & served out his time under said Captain Charles McConnel & General Muhlenberg was at the expiration thereof discharged & returned home said McConnel discharged him but which discharge has been lost by accident.
    2 Again in the year 1781 in the month of September if he recollects aright he was drafted to go in the expedition to York Town against Lord Cornwallis, was enrolled under Colonel Lockard [?] (Captain's name not recollected) marched under said Lockard to York Town was there under the command of General Washington until the surrender [October 19, 1781] & was discharged & returned home, said tour was three months & was verbally discharged by Colonel Lockard.
    16 Again was enrolled as volunteer for two weeks when Richmond was destroyed but has in the great lapse of time forgotten his officers at that time, but in the four several times served seven months & an half in the Revolutionary war & for which he claims compensation & to be pensioned, that he has no documentary or written evidence, nor does he know of any person by whom the Services can be fully proved but that John Gragg & James McMurtey are persons who reside in his vicinity and who are known to him & he to them & by whom he can establish the reputation of his services in the Revolutionary war. That there is no resident minister of the Gospel in his vicinity by whom he can establish the facts required by the Secretary of War. That he from age & bodily infirmity is unable to attend the Court in order to have his claim made out.
    He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the roll of the agency of any State.

    [p 9: On March 23, 1844 in Greene County Tennessee, Robert McKemy, aged 56 years, made oath that he is the son of Samuel McKemy who was a pensioner at the rate of $21 per annum; that his father died August 23, 1834 leaving affiant's mother having been married to her after the termination of his service in the revolutionary war; that his mother died December 9th, 1841 leaving the following children Rebecca Cook, Robert McKemy, Elender Ottinger, Alexander McKemy and Jane Borden.

    [Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $21.66 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for service as a private for 6 months and 15 days in the Virginia militia. His widow's heirs were pensioned in right of the widow in a like amount commencing March 4th, 1836 and ending with the widow's death.]
