Samuel was orphaned before his third birthday. We believe he was raised by his mother's siblings, John Hutchinson and John's wife, Ann Church; then Rebecca Hutchinson, and her husband, Dr. Edward Chatman/Chapman.

Samuel's son, William Johnson Ashton (1796-1883), wrote in a letter dated September 8, 1875, and addressed to Thomas Hutchinson Ashton (1841-1914), that his father, "...was born February 1771. He had one sister older than himself who was burned to death when a young woman. They were born and raised in Bucks County [Pennsylvania]. My grandmother's maiden name was Hutchinson. She had one brother Thomas Hutchinson after whom my brother Thomas was named and one sister Rebecca Hutchinson who married Dr. Edward Chatman a physician who raised my father as his father died when he was only three years old...My father married to Hannah Johnson October 14 1795 and emigrated to Fayette County [Western ?] Pennsylvania in the fall of 1799 where he remained until the Spring of 1807 when he moved to Washington County [Ohio]. In the Spring of 1811 he emigrated to Clermont County where he endured the hardwhips of pioneer life."

RC believes that Hannah Johnson Ashton may have died around 1810 in Marietta, Ohio, based on information on Samuel & Hannah's son, Alexander. There are citations for Samuel's 2nd marriage in Brown County, Ohio, in 1820, to Sarah Curley [Mrs. Sarah Curless, per Samuel's will].
