Childhood

Rose Elizabeth Marshall was born on 12th July 1872 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Rachel Ellen Marshall, formerly Linney, and her husband George Marshall, a straw hat blocker. Her birth certificate gives her first name as Rosa, but subsequently she always appears to have been known as Rose. She was the sixth of eight children. The family briefly moved away from Luton in the late 1870s, living in Peterborough, where George worked as a railway labourer. The move was short-lived, and by 1881 the family was back in Luton living at 46 Albert Road.

Adulthood

Rose appears with her parents and siblings living at 46 Albert Road in each census from 1881 to 1901. She became a straw hat maker. On Christmas Eve 1904, aged 32, Rose married Albert Arthur Fookes, a bricklayer. They appear to have had five children together between 1905 and 1913, although one died aged four. Rose's father died in 1907 and her mother in 1908, both at 46 Albert Road. The 1911 census finds the family living at 4 Queen Street in Luton.

Albert died in 1936, aged 65. He died at 27 Cumberland Street, and Rose was still living at that address at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Rose died in 1942, aged 70.
