Emily Eliza Marshall was born on 12th June 1874 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Rachel Ellen Marshall, formerly Linney, and her husband George Marshall, a straw hat blocker. Shortly after Emily's birth the family moved to Peterborough, fifty miles away, where Emily's younger sister Rachel was born in 1877. The move was short-lived, and the family returned to Luton before 1881. Both the 1881 and 1891 censuses find Emily living with her parents and siblings at 46 Albert Road in Luton.

On 20th December 1896, Emily married Walter Harry Horsler. Between 1897 and 1907 they had five children together. Walter worked as a straw hat blocker, whilst Emily was a straw hat machinist. The 1901 census finds them living at 7 Tennyson Road, whilst by 1911 they were living at 111 Albert Road. They were still living there at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.

Emily lived to see all five of her children married, and all four of her grandchildren were born in her lifetime. Walter died in 1952, aged 76. Emily outlived him by fifteen years, and died in 1967, aged 93. Immediately before her death she had been living at 39 St Saviour's Cresent in Luton.
