Childhood
Joseph Marshall was born in 1868 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw bonnet sewer named Rachel Ellen Marshall, formerly Linney, and her husband George Marshall, a straw hat blocker. When he was born, both his maternal grandparents were still alive, living in Leighton Buzzard, where his mother was from. His paternal grandmother had died earlier in 1868 and his paternal grandfather a few years before that.
The 1871 census finds Joseph living with his parents and siblings at 39 Albert Road in Luton. Joseph's maternal grandfather, John Linney, died later that year, when Joseph was still under three years old. In the late 1870s the family moved away from Luton to Peterborough, fifty or so miles away to the north, where George took up work on the railway. The move proved short-lived, and by 1881 the family was back in Luton, living at 46 Albert Road, which was to be Joseph's parents' home for the rest of their lives. In the 1881 census Joseph (who was twelve at the time) was described as a domestic servant.
Adulthood
In 1890, Joseph married a Phillis Jane Marlow, who was from Sundon, just north of Luton. It seems quite likely that Joseph was also the father of the daughter Phillis had in 1889, less than a year before they married.
The year 1890 also saw the death of Joseph's last surviving grandparent, his maternal grandmother Eliza Biley, late Linney, formerly Hickinbottom. She appears to have moved from Leighton Buzzard to Luton following her second husband's death in 1881, so Joseph may have known her reasonably well.
The 1891 census finds Joseph and Phillis living at 9 Cromwell Road in Luton, with Phillis's parents living next door at 11 Cromwell Road. Phillis was working as a straw hat sewer, whilst Joseph was a straw hat blocker. The situation in 1901 was very similar. Joseph and Phillis were living at 47 Cromwell Road, whilst her parents were again next door at 49 Cromwell Road.
Joseph and Phillis had ten children together in total between 1889 and 1910. Joseph's father George died in 1907, when Joseph was 38. His mother Rachel died less than a year later.
Joseph died on 24th June 1910 when he was only 41. He had Phillis had been married about twenty years. Their youngest son George died at about the same time, aged about eighteen months.
Phillis appears in the 1911 census with her nine surviving children living at 46 Vernon Road in Luton. She outlived Joseph by over forty years but never remarried. She died in 1950, aged 81.
