Joseph Marshall was born in 1901 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Phillis Jane Marshall, formerly Marlow, and her husband Joseph Marshall, a straw hat blocker. Joseph's father died in 1910, when Joseph was about nine years old. He appears in the 1911 census living with his widowed mother and siblings at 46 Vernon Road in Luton. He has yet to be researched after 1911.
