Childhood
Albert Arthur Fookes was born in 1870 at Bow Brickhill in Buckinghamshire, son of a straw hat sewer called Mary Ann Fookes, formerly Perry, and her husband Thomas Fookes, a bricklayer. His birth certificate gives his first names as "Arthur Albert", but every other sighting of him has the names the other way around. Having been born in Bow Brickhill, the family moved to the nearby town of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire shortly after Albert's birth; his sister Catherine was born there in 1872. The 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses all find Albert living with his parents and siblings in Leighton Buzzard.
Adulthood
Albert followed his father's trade and became a bricklayer. He did not marry until he was about 34; he was still living with his parents in 1901, when he was 30. When he did marry, it was a few miles away from Leighton Buzzard, at Luton, on Christmas Eve 1904. His wife was Rose Elizabeth Marshall, who was 32. They stayed in Luton, where they appear to have had five children, although one died aged four. The 1911 census finds them living at 4 Queen Street in Luton.
Albert died on 28th July 1936 at 27 Cumberland Street in Luton. He was 65. Rose outlived him by six years.
