Robert Westmorland was baptised on 28th September 1823 at Barnard Castle in County Durham, son of Joseph and Isabella Westmorland. The baptism record tells us that the family lived at Streatlam, and that Robert's father was a hind (a farm servant). The 1841 census finds Robert serving an apprenticeship to a joiner living in the town of Hartlepool.

Robert was married in 1848, aged about 25, to Ann Bradshaw, who was about 21 and from the village of South Hylton near Sunderland. After their marriage, Robert and Ann settled in South Hylton. The 1851 census finds them living at Ford Terrace in South Hylton, with Robert described as a house carpenter.

Later in 1851, Robert and Ann had a son whom they named Joseph, after Robert's father. Sadly, young Joseph died when he was just one month old. The following year, Robert and Ann had twin girls, whom they named Isabella and Jane, after each of their mothers. Isabella would also die as a baby of one month. Jane was the longest lived of Robert and Ann's children, and she only lived to be three years old, dying in 1856. All three children were buried at South Hylton. After the twins, Robert and Ann do not appear to have had any more children - in the 1911 census Ann reported that she had had three children born alive, all of whom had died.

The 1861 census finds Ann living with her half-sister Jane in Sunderland, whilst Robert was a long way from home, lodging in Sheerness in Kent. The nature of the censuses is such that we do not know if he just happened to be away for the night of the census or whether this was a longer term stay. Either way, Robert returned to South Hylton, where he died on 4th June 1869, aged 45. He left effects valued at less than £50, which passed to his widow Ann. Ann outlived him by over forty years, and remarried five years after his death.
