Jane Ann Westmorland was born on 17th September 1852 at South Hylton in the township of Ford in the parish of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham. She was the daughter of Ann Westmorland, formerly Bradshaw, and her husband Robert Westmorland, a joiner. Jane had a twin sister named Isabella, but sadly Isabella died when she was only one month old.

Jane was baptised in the chapel at South Hylton on 4th June 1854, when she was nearly two years old. Sadly Jane would also die as a child, being buried at South Hylton on 30th April 1856. She was just three years old.

  5.   Although the name in the burials transcript is given as Mary Ann rather than Jane Ann this is believed to be a mistake; there is no corresponding death registration for a Mary Ann Westmorland, and the age is almost spot on for Jane Ann.
