Records of Robert Torbett in Augusta County, VA

From Chalkley's:

  • Vol. 2 - 1786--September 27, John Milliken and Isabella Doak; surety, Robert Torbet.
  • Vol. 2 - 1798--November 6, Anthony Black and John Torbet, surety. Anthony Black and Catherine Torbet, of age, daughter of Robert Torbet. "This is to certify that we are agreed to this match. Given under my hand. Hugh Torbet."
  • Vol. 2 - Torbett vs. Torbett--O. S. 29; N. S. 10--Augusta. Hugh and Robert Torbett were brothers. Samuel Torbett was son of Hugh. Anthony Black married Hugh Torbett's daughter. (Note: in the marriage record of Catherine Torbett and Anthony Black, shown above, Robert Torbett is clearly identified as Catherine's father. It appears that since Robert had died prior to this date that Hugh Torbett's listing as Catherine's father may have been because Hugh may have raised her after Robert's death, so he may have been her father "by proxy").
  • Vol 2, pp 300-309 by Lyman Chalkley, Marriage Bond in Augusta County, 1787--March 26, Robert Talbert and Hugh Talbert (Tarbet), surety. Robert Talbert and Martha Thompson, daughter of Wm. Thompson. (Note: this is marriage information for Robert Torbet, Jr.).

According to Don Tarbet in "The T Trail" the marker in the Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery states that he died in 1795 at the age of 71 years. If this is correct, he was born in 1724, and maybe before the family left Scotland. Also the monument spells his name TOLBERT, which brings up the question of why a family member would insert an L in the name. There were Tolberts living in Virginia at this time which may mean that this stone is NOT Robert Torbett's marker.

If however this is Robert Torbett's marker, it is noteworthy that there are 2 small stones with the letters BT and PT on them. Possibly marking the graves of two children who died in infancy.
