Robert Sweeney was born on 22nd June 1873 at Barsalloch Farm in the parish of Mochrum, Wigtownshire, son of Janet Sweeney, formerly Milroy, and her husband Michael Sweeney, a farm labourer. Robert appears in the 1881 census living with his parents and younger siblings at Kirkinner, also in Wigtownshire. By 1891 Robert had left home and was working as a farm servant in the parish of Penninghame, which covered the town of Newton Stewart.

On 4th June 1897, Robert married Helen Oliver Muir at Corwar, a farm in the parish of Sorbie. At the time of their marriage Robert was working as a ploughman and lived in Penninghame. On their second wedding anniversary they had a daughter, Madge, in 1899. By this time they were living at 32 Phoenix Park Terrace in Glasgow and Robert was working as a police constable. Sadly Helen died in the same year that Madge was born, leaving Robert a widower with a young daughter to look after. By 1901, Madge was living with her maternal grandfather back in Sorbie, whilst Robert was still living at 32 Phoenix Park Terrace.

Robert has yet to be traced after 1901, but it can be deduced that he was still alive in 1911 from the answers his parents gave to the 1911 census.
