Janet Sweeney was born on 22nd February 1887 at Penninghame in Wigtownshire, daughter of Janet Sweeney, formerly Milroy, and her husband Michael Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. Young Janet appears in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses living with her parents and siblings in Penninghame. In 1916 she married Andrew Gordon. Later that year Janet was the informant for her father's death. At this time she was living at 24 Queen Street in Newton Stewart.

Janet died in 1939 in Dumfries, aged 51.
