Biography Notes
After Robert's mother died in 1936, he lived with the Kapitzky family in Strasburg, and can be found in their household in the 1940 census. Mary Kapitzky, 74, was a widow and head of the household which included her unmarried daughter, Frances, 38, and Robert, 19. Frances Kapitzky Person: Frances Kapitzky (1) was a prominent woman and served as the president of the Citizens-State Bank and also as the president of the Strasburg Board of Education. (In 1936-1937, Strasburg opened a new high school. The 1937 Senoracle notes..."Dedicating our new gym, the finest in this part of the state, we will never again hear that name 'box car' ascribed to Strasburg's playing floor.'")
In Robert's Strasburg yearbooks, The Senoracle, 1936, 1937 and 1938, Paul M. Roby, Otterbein College Class of 1927, and Glenn Baker, Otterbein College Class of 1932, are part of the high school faculty. Roby was Robert's teacher and senior class advisor and also his basketball and baseball coach. One of the newspaper clippings in Robert's collection was an article about the Strasburg basketball team attending an Otterbein College game. Perhaps Coach Roby played a role in Robert attending Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio.
In his senior yearbook, Robert Raica, "Bucky" is noted as "...a very capable and dependable substitutes at all times."
In Robert's collection is his 1938 Ohio High School Athletic Association's State Tournament Player trophy.
At Otterbein, Robert joined the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, referred to as the "Country Club." Letters in his collection written in June (from England)and July (from France) 1944 are addressed to Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, whom Robert refers to as "Mom and Dad." In his July 20th, 1944 letter, he writes that, "I am glad to hear that you're still at the Frat House for Country Club wouldn't seem the same without you."
An avid tennis player, Robert Raica and his doubles partner since 1941, Jim Demorest, won the 1976 Gold Circle Doubles Tournament in August 1976.
