Philip Schug Is Claimed By Death:President of Berne Council Passes Away Sunday Morning.

Philip Schug, 70, one of Berne’s pioneer citizens, died Sunday morning at 8:15 at his home after suffering only afew days with angina pectoris. He had been associated in the insurance business with his son for the past 15 years under the firm name of Philip Schug & Son.

During most of his life he had been very active in Berne politics, and had been president of the Berne city council for a 16 year period. He had also twice been a candidate for auditor a number of years ago. He had been in various lines of business in Berne since going there from French, Township about 45 years ago.

His wife died in 1919, and until he had since then for the most part made his home with his eldest son. He is survived by three children Mrs. C. V. Millikan of Virginia Beach Va., Jesse and E. J. Schug of Berne, and also eight grandchildren. Two Brothers also survive, Rudolph of Berne and John H. Schug of Decatur, retired hardway merchant and financier.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Cross Reformed Church in Berne and Burial will be made in the M. R. E. cemetery west of the city.

In the Town of Berne for more than twenty-two years Philip Schug has been in general insurance business and has built up a clientele that makes his agency one of the most important in this section of the state. The business is now conducted as Philip Schug & Son. Their offices are in the Peoples State Bank Building. Philip Schug entered the insurance field at Berne in 1896 for fifteen years previous to this being engaged in several other businesses in the city and has kept his business growing every successive year. He handles all classes of insurance, both life and fire, indemnity, bonding, tornado, and other lines of risk, and represents some of the oldest standard insurance companies. His office writes about $150,000 worth of life insurance every year, and the other departments are correspondingly prosperous.

He worked on the family farm until he reached his twenty-third year. he came to Berne and etablished himself in the implement business. He also handled and sold sewing machines. His venture was a success and he increased his business and prospered.
