Facts and Events
Tenth anniversary souvenir Edition Berne Witness 1906 During the period of great prosperity throughout the country the past eight or ten years Berne also enjoyed an unprecedeated growth in all its interests. Properties rose in value at enormous strides, in many cases more than doubling, and men formerly of quite ordinary means became capitalists on a small scale. And so it was but natural that the banking business in Berne should increase in proportion. And so it did. Thus in such an ear of prosperity the old bank would not be left to win all its fruits. So other men of means united to found the second financial institution in Berne. It was in February 1903 when a number of men thus met and organized the People's State Bank, with a capital stock of $40,000. The following were its first directurs: Ed Engeler, Julius Schug, and Nelson Kerr, of Berne.joseph Rich and Rudolph Schug of French Tp; Samuel Egly, of geneva and Charles E. Dugan of Decatur. This Queen Anne home was built in 1907 by Emanuel Wanner. It was constructed for the Schug family, who occupied the home for 25 years, and whom the innkeepers chose the name of their inn. Victorian features decorate the home, including inlaid floors, pocket doors and a wraparound porch. Guest rooms boast walnut, cherry and oak furnishings. 1910 Census Manager Hardware Store Image Gallery
