John Henry Schug as born west of Berne, in the vicinity of Vera Cruz, in French Twp. Adams Co. on September 11, 1868, the youngest of eight children to Charles (Carl) and Catharine Rausch Schug. He was married to Effie Loretta Woodward of Decatur on June 23, 1900. Three children were born of this marriage: George Woodward, Mary Katherine and Richard Henry Schug. Mr. Schug and his family had resided at 330 Third St. Decatur since their marriage of 32 years. Before that time John Schug worked on the family farm in French Twp. And later was employed in the Schug Brothers’ Hardware in Berne. From here he went to Fort Wayne where he was connected with a hardware supplier. Later he became a traveling hardware salesman and represented the Miller Hardware Company of Richmond Indiana the fifth largest wholesale hardware house in the United States for 29 years before he retired in 1926. John Schug was a member of the Presbyterian church of Decatur and also had been a trustee of the church. He died of a heart attack. In death the obituary stated: John Schug “…was an upright man who for many years devoted his time to business, who built and saved and led an exemplary life. …we knew him as a conscientiously good man always standing up for what he believed was right. … He was admired and respected and will be missed by many.”
