1920-09-16 pg 1 - The Journal and Republican (Lowville, NY) NORTON W. STODDARD Was Born April 5. 1830 and Died September 9, 1920, at the Home of His Youngest Brother, O. Duane Stoddard. Norton W. Stoddard passed away Thursday, September 9 at the home of his youngest brother, O. Duane Stoddard, near Lowville, with whom he had resided since the death of his wife, which occurred last January. Although past 90 years of age Mr. Stoddard had retained his faculties and good health till about two weeks previous to his departure. He had spent many pleasant hours hoeing in the garden during the summer. Death was due to gangrene in the right leg causing intense suffering. Mr. Stoddard's parents were the late Levi and Marenda Stoddard of Copenhagen, he having been the oldest of a family of eight children. He was born April 5, 1830, in the town of Champion, near Pleasant Lake, and when about five years of age removed with his parents to a farm in the town of Pinckney, Lewis county, where he resided many years. In May, 1850 he married Rachel Williams. They soon after went to Copenhagen to reside, where he had spent the greater part of his life, part of the time being a farmer near the village. Of this union one son was born, Lewis, who died about two years ago. His wife passed away In September, 1872. Later he was again married to Nancy Needham, of Copenhagen, who died last January. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Olive M. Stoddard, who came from Michigan to be with him until the end; two granddaughters, Mrs. George Schleider, or Manchester Depot, Vt., and Mrs. Gordon Berry, of Carthage; also four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; besides two brothers, Levi Wesley, of Champion, and the one with whom he resided; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Stoddard credited his long life of good health to-the non-use of intoxicants and tobacco from which he had always been a free abstainer. In politics he was a staunch Republican. He lived a noble life and was a grand old man and a highly respected citizen. He had witnessed many changes in the growth of the country. In early manhood he drove a team of horses over the old plank road from Lowville to Rome, then the nearest railway station, hauling dairy products to Rome and returning with merchandise for the stores, of Pinckney, Lowville and Copenhagen. He later learned the carpenter's trade and assisted in erecting large blocks in Watertown, one the old Winslow block recently burned, and hotels at the Thousand Islands. Funeral services were held from the Congregational church, Copenhagen, Saturday, Rev. J. Turner officiating. Interment was made at Riverside cemetery.

1882-06-14 pg 02 - Lewis County Democrat COURT PROCEEDINGS
The People against Norton W. Stoddard.
Indictment for forgery and uttering forged papers. Jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and prisoner discharged. Defendant was indicted in May 1877, for forgery, charged with forging or uttering, knowing it to be forged, a certain receipt purporting to be signed by one George Bush, for $271 to be applied on a certain mortgage for $300 given by Rachel Stoddard. The defendant was tried at a court of sessions held by Hon. C. H. Walts, county judge of Jefferson county, in December, 1878, and the jury failed to agree.
He was again tried at a court of sessions, held by Judge Walts, in December 1880, and found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment in the state prison in Auburn for the term of two years. The defendant obtained a writ of error and had a stay of proceedings upon the judgment, and the conviction was reviewed by the supreme court at general term in the fourth department and a new trial ordered.
The defendant was again tried at this term of the oyer and terminer, Judge Merwin presiding. The jury, after being out twenty hours, including one night, brought in a verdict of not guilty.
The mortgage in question was given by Rachel Stoddard, wife of Norton W. Stoddard to Zimri Bush for $300, by Zimri Bush assigned to DeWitt C. West; by him assigned to Geo. Bush; by him assigned to William Bush, who brought an action to foreclose the mortgage in 1870, upon the trial of which the receipt in question was put in evidence by Stoddard. It is a singular circumstance that at the time of the last trial, Rachel Stoddard, who gave the mortgage, Zimri Bush to whom it was given, DeWitt O. West, George Bush and William Bush, to whom it had been assigned, were all dead, and that Wilmot, of Carthage, a witness in the case, was also dead.
This ends this protracted matter which has created considerable interest not only in Harrisburgh and Denmark, where both parties reside, but also in other parts of the county as well.
