1903-05-16 - The Watertown Herald (Watertown, NY) "WAS NINETY-SIX. Champion, May 15 -Mrs. Marenda Stoddard, widow of the late Levi I. Stoddard, passed peacefully away at the home of her son, L. Wesley Stoddard at 5 o'clock Friday morning. May 8, after a short illness with pneumonia. She had been in usual health with the exception of a slight cold until a week ago Wednesday morning previous to her death when she was taken suddenly worse, and though all was done that care and medical aid could do, the case seemed hopeless from the first as she had not the strength to regain health owing to her advanced age. She retained her faculties till the last excepting sight which failed about six months ago. Mrs. Stoddard was a daughter of the late Samuel and Sally (Sage) Orvis, who emigrated from Conn. in 1806, and was the last of her father's family of seven children. She was born in the town of Denmark near Copenhagen, May 6, 1807, and in 1814 removed with her parents to the Maple Grove farm near Pleasant Lake where she spent her early life until her marriage to Mr. Stoddard, June 1, 1828. They then went to Pinckney to reside on a farm and after several years removed to Copenhagen. Of this union there were born eight children; Norton W., and Samuel O., of Copenhagen; O. Duane, of Lowvllle; Mrs. Sarah Clobrldge, of Allen, Mich.; and Cephas R., and L. Wesley, of this place. Two daughters, Mrs. Clorinda M. Hodge and Mrs. Emily C. Lang departed a few years since. There are also living twenty grand children, sixteen great-grand-children and four great-great-grand-children. Mrs. Stoddard was an affectionate mother and loved by all who knew her. She was a sincere and earnest Christian from early childhood and when the summons came it found her ready to go. Funeral services were held from her late home Sunday, Rev. A. W. Rich officiating. Interment at Riverside cemetery, Copenhagen."
