Michael Sweeney was born on 20th August 1874 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, son of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. He appears in the 1881 census living with his parents and siblings at 14 High Street in Sorbie. By 1891 he was working as a farm servant at Culnoag, just west of Sorbie village.

By 1901 Michael was working as a cattleman for a dairy farmer at Dryburgh in Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire. He has yet to be traced after 1901.
