Peter Sweeney was born on Christmas Eve 1866 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, son of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. The 1871 and 1881 censuses both find Peter living at Sorbie with his parents and siblings. By 1881 he was working as an agricultural labourer. The 1891 census finds Peter and his brother Patrick Thomas boarding with their older sister Mary and her family in Glasgow.
The 1901 census finds Peter working at a farm in Kirkcudbright. In 1908 Peter was married at New Abbey in Kirkcudbrightshire to a Harriett Millar. She died about four years later, aged 34.
In 1918, Peter married again to a Catherine Crosbie at Dumfries. In 1928 Peter was living at 7 Camphill in Paisley, when he was the informant for his mother's death.
Peter and Catherine were married for about fourteen years. She died in 1932, aged 38.
Peter outlived Catherine by fifteen years, and died in 1947 at Morton in Dumfriesshire. He was eighty years old.
