Catherine Sweeney was born on 24th August 1869 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, daughter of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. Catherine appears in the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with her parents and siblings in Sorbie.

In 1891 Catherine married a ploughman named John Rodgers. The census later that year finds Catherine still living with her parents, although her husband was away from home on census night. By 1901 Catherine had moved to Glasgow, and she and John appear to have been living with Catherine's sister Bridget at 289 Broad Street. Catherine has yet to be traced after 1901.

Although Catherine (Kate) appears to have reverted to her maiden name and is described here as single, the boarder (also supposedly single) appears to be her husband. No other explanation for Catherine's whereabouts in the 1901 census has been found, and she is living with her sister (who has also reverted to her maiden name). If this is not this Catherine, then there is no obvious other candidate called Catherine Sweeney from Sorbie whom it could be.
