James Sweeney was born on 19th November 1871 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the eighth of ten children of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. Young James appears in the 1881 census living with his parents and siblings at 14 High Street in Sorbie. By 1891 he had left home and was working as a farm servant at Knockencurr in the neighbouring parish of Kirkinner.

James has yet to be traced after 1891.
