    MICHAEL ARTMAN
    b. ca 1770 - d. ca 1817

Michael Artman was born about 1770 probably in Cumberland or Bedford Cos., Pennsylvania and believed to be the son of John and Margaret Artman and to have brothers: Jacob, John and Adam and at least four sisters and possibly another brother whose names are unknown.

Michael Artman married Margaret Mason about 1792 probably in Fayette Co., Pa. Margaret Mason was the daughter of Martin and Christina (Waite) Mason (Hester-Stough Genealogy by Martin Hester, Norwalk. O. 1905.) neighbors of John and Margaret Artman in German Township, Fayette County, Pa. (Horn`s Papers Vol. III). Martin Mason (Meason) owned 272 acres adjoining John Artman's 298 acres. Martin Mason was on the same early tax lists in Pennsylvania as John Artman and was in German Twp. , Fayette Co., in the 1790 Census.

From Michael's land purchases and the Tax Records in Kentucky, I believe him to have been a farmer as most men were in his time. He purchased 188 1/2 acres (see p.1) on waters of Big Clifty (Barton's Run) in 1800 and was taxed in Hardin County for that property until it became a part of Grayson County in 1810. He was then taxed in Grayson County for the years 1810 through 1816 after which his name no longer appears on tax lists, however, his wife, Margaret, does appear on the 1817 and 1818 tax lists for the same 188 1/2 acres. From these tax lists I believe Michael died about 1816 or 1817. His wife, Margaret, is listed as Head of Household in the 1820 Census, Richland County, Ohio and the children are with her. (Family group
    sheet attached).

The following facts were learned about Michael Artman in Kentucky:

Hardin County Court Order Book II. "26 Oct. 1809 A Mill ordered to be built under hand of Jacob Artman and Michael Artman and many others."

Minutes of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Grayson County, Kentucky:

11 Oct. 1811 Michael Artman received by experience.
5 Dec. 1812 Complaint brought by Br. Michael Artman against Br. Mahu Harris for the sin of intoxication and offering to fight.
9 Jan. 1813 Brs. Dale and Shaw their report as respects their citing Br. Harris to attend the meeting to a charge brought against him by Br. Michael Artman (copied as written).

All of Michael's sons settled in Ohio except David who is shown on the 1827 Tax List for Grayson County, Kentucky. As of this date, Nov. 1975, I have not located Michael's wife. Margaret, after the 1820 Census in Ohio, however, the date for her death has been passed down through the years as 14 April 1849 but: no reference as to where the death occurred. I have been unable to verify this date either in Ohio or Kentucky.
