Biography of Matthew Armstrong
According to his Revolutionary Pension declaration, Matthew was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina in 1862 which was recorded in an old Bible[1]. He and Widow Catharine Titman were married on 21 November 1831 in Lincoln County, North Carolina[2]. Matthew died in Lincoln County, North Carolina on 21 June 1838[1].
Veteran of Revolution
Matthew is a veteran of the Revolutionary War having enlisted for ten months service in Lincoln County, North Carolina in April 1781[1]. He served his ten months under Captain William McKensey's Company, Colonel William Hill's and William Polk's North Carolina Regiment[8]. He also fought in the battle of Eutaw Springs in South Carolina. He was allowed a pension on his application executed April 29, 1834, while a resident of Lincoln County, North Carolina[9][10]. His unnamed widow drew his final pension and was paid $116.66[1][11].
Matthew Marries Catharine Fite Titman
Matthew's first wife is Margaret Shipley Sloan Armstrong. She died May 27, 1829[6]. Matthew was 76 years old when he married Catharine (Fite) Titman so they had no children[2]. His first wife, Margaret Sloan Shipley passed away May 27, 1829, and is also buried in Smith Cemetery along with other family members[3]. They had several children. Matthew is also buried in Gaston County, North Carolina in Smith Cemetery[3].
=Matthew Armstrong Dies Intestate
Probate files in Lincoln County, North Carolina state that Matthew Armstrong died intestate[17]. On 4 February 1839, Catharine is allowed one year's provision to live on as his widow[12]. Catharine also signs away her rights to her husband's estate which was worth over $2,000[14]. The estate is settled by Administrator James Armstrong, probably one of his sons[15]. The estate accounting was $2,137.26, quite an estate for this time. Final accounting after expenses was for $1,981.93[16].
