Mary Wingrove's origins are unknown. Her answers to the 1841 census suggest that she was born between 1766 and 1771 in Hertfordshire. One possibility is that she was the Mary Wingrave baptised at Redbourn on 16th August 1767.

Mary's first confirmed sighting is when she was married, on 1st November 1791 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire. Her husband was John Hornet, a labourer.

Mary and John had six children together between 1792 and 1806 - the elder two baptised at Kimpton and the younger four at neighbouring Wheathampstead. John died aged 39 in 1806, just five months after the baptism of their youngest child. At the time of John's death the family was living at Gustardwood, a hamlet which straddles the boundary between Wheathampstead and Kimpton parishes.

Mary outlived John by many years. She appears in the 1841 census living at Great Cutts, a remote hamlet in the extreme west of Wheathampstead parish. She seems to have been living with her niece and nephew Mary and Edward Ashby (who were her late husband John's sister Elizabeth's daughter and son).

Some time between 1841 and 1848 Mary left Wheathampstead and moved to the parish of Flamstead. Mary's youngest daughter Sarah had moved from Wheathampstead to Flamstead in the 1830s with her husband and children, so it is quite likely Mary went to live with her daughter.

Mary died at Flamstead on 29th April 1848, aged 83, and was buried there on 3rd May 1848.
