John Hornet was born on 8th April 1806 and baptised the following month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, son of Mary Hornet, formerly Wingrove, and her husband John Hornet. Just five months later John's father died.

John died as a young man of 18, being buried at neighbouring Kimpton on 25th January 1825. He was described as having lived at Blackmore End, on the border between Wheathampstead and Kimpton.
