Mary Elizabeth Treby was born on 23rd February 1881 at Torquay in Devon. She was the daughter of Charlotte Ellen Treby, formerly Burton, and her husband William Painter Treby, a cabinet maker. The family lived at 4 Myrtle Row, a row of cottages on the street called Stentiford's Hill, where they appear in the 1881 census. Mary Elizabeth seems to have been known by her middle name as either Elizabeth or Lizzie.

Lizzie's mother died in 1888, when Lizzie was only seven years old.

The family clearly struggled financially at times; the 1891 census finds Lizzie living with her father and some of her siblings in the Newton Abbot Union Workhouse.

By 1901 Lizzie had moved to London and found work as a domestic servant, working for a solicitor's family in the Stoke Newington area.

In 1903, aged 22, Lizzie married Charles Richard Savage (who was known as Dick) in Islington. They had a daughter called Laura Maud later that year, but sadly she died when only a few months old. They had another daughter in 1906, called Phyllis Louisa Mary.

The 1911 census finds Lizzie and Dick living with their daughter at 66 Chalk Farm Road in the St Pancras area of London. They shared the house with Dick's brother and his family. Dick was working as a packer for a grocery.

By 1916 Lizzie and Dick had left London and moved to Dartford in Kent. Several of Dick's siblings and his mother had moved there from London a few years earlier - the 1911 census found his brother Walter, sister Lily and his mother living at two different addresses on Fulwich Road in Dartford.

After about a ten year gap since their previous daughter's birth, Lizzie and Dick had another daughter in Dartford in 1916, called Dorothy Joan. It seems Lizzie's father also followed them to Dartford, presumably to live with or near Lizzie. He died in Dartford later in 1916.

Lizzie and Dick went on to have one more daughter in Dartford in 1922, called Betty Corinne.

In 1927 Lizzie's older half-sister Louisa Jane died at Lizzie's home in Dartford, 36 Fulwich Road. Lizzie administered her half-sister's estate after her death.

At the outbreak of the Second World War the family was still living at 36 Fulwich Road in Dartford. Dick was described as a manager of a grocery and provision store. Their daughter Phyllis was living with them with her husband and young daughter.

Dick died in 1957, aged 78. His last home was recorded as being 36 Fulwich Road in Dartford, but he died at Addlestone in Surrey, at the home of their daughter Dorothy and her husband. He was buried at Addlestone Cemetery.

After Dick's death, Lizzie moved in with Dorothy's family. They left Addlestone and moved to East Horsley, also in Surrey, where by October 1958 they were living at a house called Marlow on South Ockham Road. Lizzie died on 15th January 1961, aged 79, just a few weeks before she would have turned eighty. She was buried alongside Dick at Addlestone Cemetery.

Her date of birth here contradicts that given on her baptism record, but it is considered likely to be an error. This is the address she was living at in 1927 when she administered her half-sister's estate, and nothing has been found to suggest that she died and Charles Richard remarried.
