Islington is the central district of the London Borough of Islington. It is an inner-city district in London, spanning from Islington High Street to Highbury Fields, encompassing the area around the busy Upper Street. The name is now also often applied to the areas of the borough close to Upper Street such as Barnsbury, Canonbury, and De Beauvoir Town, developed in the Georgian era. [1]

Research Tips

Islington is one of the ancient parishes of Middlesex. In 1889 it was transferred from Middlesex to the newly-created County of London and in 1900 became Islington Metropolitan Borough. Islington Metropolitan Borough was abolished in 1965, becoming part of the London Borough of Islington.
