Mary died from an apparently accidental gunshot wound from a shotgun wielded by her husband, John Ed Vest.S7 According to Betty Vest (wife of Mary's son Robert W. Vest, Sr), John Ed is said to have served some time for the shooting, but was eventually released and remarried.S5
