Mary died in 1928 from an apparently accidental gunshot wound from a shotgun wielded by her husband.S4 According to Betty Vest (wife of Mary's son Robert W. Vest, Sr), John Ed is said to have served some time for the shooting, but was eventually released and remarried.S2

In 1930, John and Mary's children are recorded as living with relatives. Lewis with his uncle (John Ed's brother) Tom Pink Vest, and Johnny, Frances, and Bob with their paternal grandmother, Matilda Eubanks, who lived two houses away from Tom, on Georgia Mountain in Marshall County, Alabama.S1
