Mary Shelton was baptised on 9th April 1786 in the parish of Barnwell St Andrew in Northamptonshire, daughter of Mary Shelton, formerly Porter, and her husband Thomas Shelton.
Mary’s next sighting is in 1807, when she married a shepherd named William Marriott in the nearby town of Oundle. At the time of their marriage they were both living at Churchfield, a farm to the west of the town. After their marriage their first two children were baptised back at Mary’s native Barnwell, before moving to Glapthorn, a couple of miles to the north and the other side of Oundle, where they had a further nine children together baptised between 1811 and 1832. Back in Barnwell, Mary’s mother died in 1837.
William died in 1838, aged 57. Mary appears in the 1841 census living at Glapthorn with some of her younger children and her grandson Thomas (her daughter Mary’s son). Her father Thomas was living in Barnwell with Mary’s eldest son, William, and his family. Mary’s father died in 1845.
Mary and some of her younger children were still in Glapthorn at the time of the 1851 census.
Mary died in 1853, aged 67, being buried at Glapthorn on 5th August 1853.

1786 Apr[il] 9th / Mary Daugh[te]r of Tho[ma]s & Mary Shelton baptized
This baptism has been linked to the Mary Shelton who married William Marriott on the basis that in the 1851 census Mary gave her place of birth as Barnwell, whilst one of the witnesses to Mary and William's marriage was a Joseph Slater. A Joseph Slater had married Elizabeth Shelton, sister of the Mary baptised at Barnwell in 1786.
