Elizabeth Marriott was born on 18th January 1831 at Glapthorn in Northamptonshire. She was the daughter of Mary Marriott, formerly Shelton, and her husband William Marriott, a shepherd. Elizabeth’s date of birth is taken from a bible that she owned and in which she wrote her date of birth and those of her husband and their children. Her earliest documentary sighting is her baptism on 20th April 1832 at Glapthorn, when she was therefore presumably just over a year old.

Elizabeth was the youngest of her parents’ eleven children. When Elizabeth was seven years old her father died.

The 1841 census finds Elizabeth living in Glapthorn with her mother, brother and a baby nephew. Elizabeth has not been found in the 1851 census. Her mother at that time was living at a house called Frame Cottage in Glapthorn. It is quite likely that as a young woman aged twenty Elizabeth had gone to work in service somewhere, although she has not obviously been found. Elizabeth’s mother died in 1853.

On 13th Jun 1856, aged 25, Elizabeth married a wheelwright called Joseph Palmer at Glapthorn. They went on to have seven children together between 1857 and 1867, all born at Glapthorn. Each census from 1871 to 1901 finds Elizabeth and Joseph living together in Glapthorn with some of their children. Joseph’s mother was living with them in 1871. They lived in the area of Glapthorn known as Lower Glapthorn along the road now called Main Street.

Elizabeth’s first known grandchild was born in 1883, being her son Thomas’s eldest son.

Elizabeth’s daughter Annie died in 1884, aged sixteen.

Elizabeth’s sister Mary had left Glapthorn to go and live at Radcliffe in Lancashire. Four of Elizabeth’s six children who survived to adulthood also moved to Lancashire, with most of them settling around Radcliffe or nearby Bury, sometimes staying with their aunt when they first moved up there. Elizabeth’s son Philip left Glapthorn and moved to Lincolnshire.

Elizabeth’s son Thomas seems to have been the only one of her children who married and settled in Glapthorn. In the 1901 census Elizabeth and Joseph had two of Thomas’s sons staying with them.

Joseph died in 1904, aged 77.

The 1911 census find Elizabeth living with her son Thomas and his family in Glapthorn.

Elizabeth saw 25 grandchildren born in her lifetime, and also lived to be a great grandmother.

Elizabeth died at the age of 88. She was buried at Glapthorn, where she appears to have lived her whole live, on 5th March 1919.

    This baptism can be linked to the Elizabeth Marriott who married Joseph Palmer in 1856 on the basis that:
    a. Elizabeth's marriage names her father as William Marriott, shepherd;
    b. In the censuses after Elizabeth's marriage she consistently gave ages and birthplaces suggesting she was born in Glapthorn in about 1832; and
    c. The Elizabeth baptised in 1832 had a sister named Mary - and two of Elizabeth and Joseph Palmer's daughters (Elizabeth and Caroline Emma) appear in the censuses living with their aunt Mary.
