William Marriott’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when he died suggests he was born around 1781. William’s first confirmed sighting is on 21st September 1807 when he married Mary Shelton at Oundle in Northamptonshire. At the time of their marriage they were both living at Churchfield, a farm to the west of the town.

After their marriage they initially lived at the neighbouring village of Barnwell, where Mary was from, having their first two children baptised there. They then moved to Glapthorn to the north of Oundle, where they had a further nine children between 1811 and 1832, and where William worked as a shepherd.

William was buried on 5th July 1838 at Glapthorn. He was said to be 57 years old. Mary survived him by fifteen years.
