Facts and Events
Heisterkamp's Annotated Landis Ferree Tree (as of 30 April 2004) From WorldConnect Project (Allen Donald Tallmen - 14 February 2001). There are two groups of researchers with regard to the Heard family: Those who subscribe to the unproven theory of Stephen eloping with Mary Faulkner of "Wales", the daughter of "Lord" Faulkner of Wales. These researchers also are desperately clinging to the hope that proof will be found that Stephen's father was truly John Heard, "Earle of Tyrone". They believe that John Heard married Margaret McDonald, daughter of the Great O'Neill of Tyrone, Ireland. The second group of researchers believes that nothing has been proven about Stephen Heard's parents. It is a matter of record that no Earl of Tyrone has ever been named "Heard" nor does the name Heard appear in Burkes Peerage. These researchers believe they have proved that Mary Faulkner was not born in Wales, and not the daughter of "Lord Faulkner". Such a lovely family legend is really hard to give up. Just remember, no proof has ever been found of any of the above. That aside, I've found that family legends generally do have at least a "grain" of truth. I'm not certain what that "grain" is in this case. It is generally believed that Mary Faulkner was born in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and married Stephen Heard probably in Lancaster, Pennsylvania or Virginia. The grain of truth is that Mary Faulkner does come from an aristocratic background. Mary's mother was Mary Catherine Ferree, daughter of Daniel Ferree and Marie de la Warrembere of Picardie, France. Daniel Ferree was a prosperous silk manufacturer. The Ferrees had been French Huguenot silk manufacturers and members of lower Normandy's lesser nobility since 1255. References
