  3. This birth is not recorded in the published Chelmsford Vital Records. This birth date would make Mary a twin with Nathaniel. The filmed images at familysearch.org are clearly images of a handwritten copy of what must have been a heavily damaged or unreadable original, but Nathaniel's birth record (line 6 on p. 166) seems intact, and shows no indication he was a twin. The last record on p. 166 is for a daughter of Hannah Blanchard, given name either damaged or unreadable, born 30 Nov 1678. Hartman shows this as a distinct and separate child, and pairs it with a unnamed and undated (right side, line 12) Blanchard death record that does not even indicate a gender. Meanwhile Stearns shows Mary as a twin with Nathaniel, but does not include the unnamed daughter at all in the family. As there are a couple of other children in this family that died young without a recorded death, it is not clear that Hartman is correct in assuming it was the child born 1678 who died, and since it seems strange that one twin would be recorded and not the other, making it unlikely Mary was a twin of Nathaniel, it is very attractive to believe the 1678 birth belongs to Mary. There is no marriage record for her first marriage, but her first child was born 1698, so it would be a reasonable birth date, and she is listed as the last daughter in her father's will, which means she must be squeezed in after Sarah 1670, and among the recorded births for Joseph 1672, Nathaniel 1674, and Martha who died young 1676 and is presumed to have been an infant.
  4. Some secondary sources say that Mary survived Nathaniel Woods, probably because she is mentioned in his will dated 9 Feb 1737/38. But her name does not seem to appear in any post-mortem probate documents, such as an of the petition dated 21 Aug 1738 requesting that the nominated executor, who had died, be replaced by William Lawrence, and the request to appraise the real estate, which had the section of instructions about setting off the widow's dower crossed out, and the accounting 9 Mar 1738[/39], which shows a payment to "The Heirs of the Deceas'ds Widd'o". So she probably died very shortly before, or very soon after, her husband did (his death was 20 Jun 1738). [Middlesex Probate File 25512]
