Mary Bates was born the 19th of July, 1732, at Hingham, Suffolk (now Plymouth) County, Massachusetts Bay, to Jacob Bates & Mary Clark. (Vital Records of Hingham, MA, vol. 1, pg. 257.)

Mary was married to Jeremiah Hatch at Hingham, the 16th of November, 1749. (Vital Records of Hingham, MA, vol. 2, pg. 77.)

She died at Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, the 15th of September, 1777, & is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Winchester.NB: A Findagrave memorials (titled "Mary Stearns") for Mary Stearns, d/o Isaac, states she married Jeremiah Hatch and uses the gravestone of Jeremiah's wife to give her the death date of 1777. This is incorrect.

The fact that Mary Bates Hatch was the daughter of Jacob & Mary, is established by the will of her father & the subsequent administration of his estate. In his will, Jacob states:

"My will is that my son Obadiah pay to my grand.Daughter Sarah Hatch Daughter to my Daughter Mary Hatch... also my will is that my son John pay to my two Grand-daughters Mary & Raney Hatch Daughters to Mary Hatch Deceased...." (Worcester County, MA, Probate Records, Case No. 4372.)

And in the administration, bequests are given to those named, including:

"This day recd. of Simeon & Elijah Bates executors to the estate of Jacob Bates late of Thompson decd. forty dollars & sixty six cents in full, except ten dollars that Obediah Bates owes, to Sarah, Thomas Sandersons wife, of all my honored grandfather & grandmother left me by will. Eleazer Jackson Attorney for Sarah Sanderson, Mary Hatch & Raney Wakefield which are granddaughters to the above named... Sept 28. 1802" (CT Probate Records, Promfret District, vol. 9, pg. 675.)

Jeremiah Hatch in his 1808 will he names the same three granddaughters of Jacob, as his own daughters:

"I also give and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Sanderson..... I give to my Daughter Polly Hatch... I give to my Daughter Lorana Wakefield...."

Jeremiah also mentions his daughter Sarah's husband, Thomas Sanderson & their son, Leonard:

"...my Executors Thomas Sanderson my son in Law and Leonard Sanderson my grandson..." (Cheshire County, NH, Probates, Case No. 158.)

  4.   In the History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts, vol. 2, pg. 293, it incorrectly says that the Mary Bates who married Jeremiah Hatch, was the daughter of Joseph & Deborah Clapp Bates. However, Joseph Bates, in his 1748 will, calls his daughter, Mary Lincoln, not Hatch.
