Mary Almond was born on 11th August 1832 at King's Walden in Hertfordshire, daughter of Hannah and Joseph Almond, an agricultural labourer and carpenter. The family lived in the hamlet of Diamond End, where they were still living by the time of the 1841 census. Ten years later they had moved a short distance to Pond Farm in the neighbouring parish of Kimpton, before returning to Diamond End by 1861. Mary worked as a straw plaiter.

In 1862 Mary was married to a widower called George Marshall. She would have known him since childhood, as his family lived next door to hers at Diamond End in the 1841 census, although he was about fourteen years older than her. Mary and George did not marry in the King's Walden area, but in the northern suburbs of London, over thirty miles away. They later returned to King's Walden, where George was the master of a plaiting school in Breachwood Green, the largest village in the parish of King's Walden. The 1871 census find Mary and George living there with two of George's daughters from his first marriage.

Mary died in 1890, aged 57. George survived her by about four years.
