Pembroke, June 5 -- William Markus, well-known Pembroke building contractor and prominent in fraternal circles here for many years, died yesterday morning in an Ottawa hospital, where he had been a patient about a month. He was 74.

Mr. Markus had been in business here as a contractor for 43 years and had erected many buildings both in Pembroke and throughout the district. Some years ago he took an active interest in politics, and, at one time, was Liberal candidate for the Ontario legislature in North Renfrew, being defeated by the late Hon. E. A. Dunlop. Born at Golden Lake, Mr. Markus was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Markus, who later moved to Pembroke, where he spent the greater part of his life.
