    Martin Markus, 91, a native of Germany and a resident of Pembroke for nearly half a century. Born in 1834 and in 1857 he married Miss Caroline Yandt. They came to Canada in 1863, settling at Golden Lake. A bricklayer-stone mason by trade, Mr. Markus moved to Pembroke about 46 years ago. He was bereaved in 1908 by the death of his wife, following wife (sic) he lived with his son, William Markus, contractor. Of eight children only three survive: William; Mrs Charles Pankie of Pembroke; Mrs Augusta Kelow, Wilberforce.
