Mr. Hines was a resident of Lake County for 60 years, spending most of that time on his farm which he homesteaded in 1883, three miles south of Winfred. On July 1, 1883 he married Elizabeth Gertrude Downing in Palmyra, Wisconsin and together they came to Lake County to make their future home. They had eleven children in all. They had 34 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren at the time of his death. Lafayette and Elizabeth divorced in November of 1918 and Elizabeth returned to Wisconsin. In May of 1919, Lafayette married Abbie Addie Matteson. It was a short marriage. He then married Effie Bell(Ward)Hatch in January 1920. Lafayette lived on the homestead near Winfred from 1883 until 1930, in that year Mr. Hines moved to Madison where he lived up until his death.
