Joseph Tow was baptised on 31st August 1755 at Foston in Lincolnshire, son of a labourer named William Tow and his wife Mary Clark. When Joseph was seven years old his mother died. His father William remarried about eighteen months later, with his second wife being Eleanor Dunn.

Joseph died aged just twelve years old. He was buried on 15th April 1768 at Foston. At the time of his death his stepmother Eleanor was pregnant. When the baby was born later that year they named him Joseph.
